Ye olde world hopping fic. I liked this, and thanks to Travis (Kanata) for reviewing. Cool ending, and interesting snippets of other Atlantises on the way to it.

Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves - Chapter 1 - auburn - Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1 [Archive of Our Own]
Over 180,000 words. The main pairing is John/Rodney, but I'd call this Bob; the sex scenes for all pairings are not the point. Contains graphic violence, rape and torture.
This story is a step to the left AU where the SGC functions within the real world. Women don't go on gate teams, heroes have flaws, actions have consequences and people suffer real pain. The focus of the story is as much Vala, Sam, Teyla, Novack and Janet Frasier as it is J/R. And it is an epic, spanning two galaxies a great deal of time and weaving together multiple stories. The author respects her characters, and takes things like the Lindsay Novack "joke" about the hiccups and transforms her into a real, fascinating character. This is a found family story, a feminist story, a fix-it story; and I really, really enjoyed it. It helps to know both canons.
There's a slightly higher than average amount of typos and some AO3-specific formating wonkiness, but I found it easy enough to ignore. Great epic story.

The Water Grinds the Stone - Chapter 1 - auburn - Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1 [Archive of Our Own]
Epic length, complex story. Excellent Vala, Jennifer and Teyla. I recall a lot of readers at the time did not care for the length of time John stays on Earth, and away from Rodney, because he believes this personal sacrifice is necessary. To which I say, there are eleventy million John/Rodney together4evah stories, this is not about that. The story never paints in big letters that this was a bad choice on John's part, but it does show rather well that bending yourself to suit the dictates of the people in power helps to corrupt the system you're trying to prop up. Or at least that's what it said to me. I did not quite buy into one scene with Rodney near the end, but the story was exceptionally well plotted and paced and very thought provoking. This author succeeds very well in marrying SG1 and SGA which have very different tones, levels of realism, and character continuity.

Wrapped in a Red Ribbon - auburn - Stargate Atlantis [Archive of Our Own]
Going from memory on this one--I'll update when I re-read.
Really convincing AU with John as a cop and Rodney as the cranky ME who works nights. The plot is bog standard playing gay, playing kinky in a sex club with a half dose of WNGWJLEO thrown in, and yet it's got something to it that rises above that. This writer does plot very well for a start, and long before we ever got the fanon of the masochist John, she makes a convincing case for it. Good mystery, interesting character interaction and the sex club scenes focus on the characters, not the kink. This is not non-con for prurient titillation.

mcshep_match: TEAM WORK: dead of night, "The World That We Live In (No, We Can't Go Back)"
McKay/Sheppard - PG - Highlightable warning in header is a spoiler of sorts - 1300 words.
Summary: When his dad first said they were going to move, John yelled and called him a liar. He didn't tell Rodney for a long time, not until they were starting to pack and he couldn't not tell him anymore.
I'd call this Gen or at most Bob not a pairing fic as they are children. Very creepy and atmospheric.
by kyuuketsukirui as it turns out, and quelle surprise on that! Only McShep Match I finished, which tells me how finished I am with McShep and SGA.

gaiaanarchy: FIC: Curiouser and Curiouser [PG} GEN
It's a turn the tables story where Teyla leads an expedition to Earth. It's a fascinating story--sketch of an idea more than fleshed out--and very in character for all the people shown. Interesting for who isn't there, as well.
Even more fascinating is the author's note at the end--don't cheat and skip ahead--trust me, it's worth it to compare your reader response to the fic with the author's intent.
The author has left fandom.

mcshep_match: TEAM PEACE: Coup de Grâce, "Twice Blessed"
This is a Jennifer-Rodney-John story. Not a threesome, rather a poly relationship where they sometimes have sex together, and sometimes don't. Rodney is really the one in the middle of the relationships. Jennifer is a fun, caring person here, struggling with the fact that Rodney is as in love with John as he is her, while John discovers that he's as in love with Rodney as Rodney is with him. There is never any sense of more than, less than. Most of the story is sex, in a good way, it's a character study through sexual expression and understanding. I really enjoyed the growing friendship between John and Jennifer, and the idea that sex does not equal love, and friendly sex is still fun. I'm very ambivalent about the ending--it's well written and plausible, but not where I wanted the train to go. Still very enjoyable, and damn near a unique story in the fandom.

mcshep_match: TEAM PEACE: Alter Ego, "Till It Shines (The Secret Life of Rodney McKay)"
AU with John as a writer who moves in next door to Rodney. I like the way John does not instantly know how to 'handle' Rodney, and I enjoyed the science fair in the basement plot. Sometimes fic that casts characters as writers, feels like the wall between author and character gets a little too thin. This didn't go there for me. This fic also uses Jennifer to really good effect, she's almost annoying, almost, but she's her in all her perky glory and I liked her here.

mcshep_match: TEAM PEACE: Piece of the Action, "Zugzwang"
Really like this. Post series non AU, John has gone off to school, Rodney is fine, absolutely fine on Atlantis being totally and utterly not very vital to anything. I love the scene where Rodney grabs the phone and talks to John, the way Rodney's body language, what he says and what he thinks all fit together to tell what he isn't saying, even in his own thoughts. John is frustratingly, irritatingly opaque, and Rodney gets frustrated and makes him talk.
John does something in this story a lot of fans think Rodney should be angry about. Problem is, what John does is give Rodney exactly what he wants, and it's hard to be mad about that. Let's just say, oh anonymous author, that I can relate to fans being disappointed in the emotional payoffs they expected but didn't get. The story reads like reality to me, and I like it just the way it is.

mcshep_match: TEAM PEACE: Open Season, "Daytime Drama"
Enjoyable tale for fans of Soap Operas, lot's of clever in-jokes from the old days (RDA on GH). Jeannie and Rodney working together is fun, as is picturing Rodney playing two roles on a soap. The story could use some fleshing out in the latter half (fic fest deadlineitis). Fun story.

Permanent link mcshep_match: TEAM WAR: Tilting at Windmills, "Where the Brave Dare Not Go"
I enjoyed this. John as a Were, Rodney as a scientist. The animal forms are not cute cartoon animals, they're real, and the whole Were thing is very normalized and grounded in reality--no mysticism here. The sexual dynamics in human form are plausible, but not to my taste. The relationship, the sense of John's quiet solitude fitting with Rodney's abrasive charm is excellent. Nice to see Teyla, Ronon, Jennifer and Carson too.

shaenie: Indelible
The one about knowing down to the bone. The one with the cathedrae. The one with Cheema. The one. The opening scene, a fic cliché where John takes Rodney's punishment is a trope that I'm a little obsessed with. I've read some interesting inversions of it, and this fic sticks to the John as protector trope, but the whole story is a wonderful version of Atlantis with some of the best space battles written and awesome OCs and Lorne being awesome, and a believable, if formulaic, relationship at it's heart.

The Wraith come to Earth and John finally finds someone crazy enough for him. I totally bought the John/Daniel relationship. John with someone else often = not Rodney's friend and that just doesn't make sense.

In This Era of Liberty by Chandri
Archived version of the McShep Match Story. Declassification as a background to romance. This is a very standard John/Rodney with miscommunication and angst story. John is impenetrable, and Rodney is a bit passive, yet the author sells me on the characterization with very good writing. It is one of the best examples of its type.

fiercelydreamed: The Convocation
This is the story that started to push me out of SGA fandom. I love it, it's a beautiful story that takes the pretend to be married trope and uses it to show John what life would be like if got to be all of himself all the time. It's about so much more than being gay or loving Rodney. The comments are so full of infantalizing oh boys nonsense, that I don't even feel like we read the same story.
